Process
After receiving the brief, and choosing the historical event, I sketched out several basic plans of the installation, before settling on a camellia flower. I found several different images of a camellia flower from different perspectives, and then used those as references while creating the 3D model of the Camellia in Maya. Once the model was created I UV Unwrapped it and applied a marble texture. I took several images of the location for installation, and then made these backgrounds in Maya. From there I could position and rotate the flower until it looked like it matched the background and I used invisible planes to create the shadows. I then rendered and exported the finished images as .pngs from Maya. |

I started making the swiss army knife by gathering several photos and drawings of swiss army knives, both assembled and taken apart. I then used these images as references while modelling each part of the knife in Maya. After all the pieces were modeled I assembled the knife in the closed position, and made this the default position for all the parts. I then began creating the animation, moving different parts and creating keyframes for them at different times and positions, as well as creating a track for the camera. I also added some basic text to augment the video. Once I was finished I recorded and rendered the video in Maya, and exported it as a QuickTime File. |

Process:
I designed this turtle basically from scratch. I researched different kinds of joints and drew up several plans and reference diagrams. I then began modelling in Rhino, starting with the large structural pieces like the shell, head, and flippers. From there I created the joints, hinges, and center button, moving them into position and then using the boolean tool and more basic geometric shapes to make the holes and gaps for the joints to fit in to. I did a test print on a 3D Extrusion printer, and then adjusted tolerances where pieces didn't fit correctly before doing a final printing run, and then assembled the pieces. |
