Context This project was created as part of my degree at Yoobee Colleges. We were asked to create packaging for a food and drink pairing using an existing New Zealand owned Alcohol company. I worked on this project from mid October to mid September 2021.
New Zealand based company DB Breweries is one of the most well known alcohol suppliers in the country. They own several popular brands, including the newly introduced Odd Company RTDs. Recent alcohol legislation, including the reduction in breath alcohol limits has impacted on local sales. In an effort to combat binge-drinking, promote safer drinking habits, and reenergize their market, DB Breweries is seeking to partner with other well known New Zealand brands to produce a range of complimentary foods and snacks to be sold alongside current popular drinks.
Solution DB Breweries will partner with the New Zealand popcorn company Dr Bugs and pair their popular RTD Odd Company with Dr Bugs’s pocorn range. Dr Bugs already offers an ‘adult range’ with gourmet flavours and smaller sizes to pair with wines and other alcohols. To match Odd Company’s colourful packaging, fun flavours, and unique character, they will introduce a new gourmet rainbow popcorn flavour in snack-sized portions.
I redesigned the packaging for both the Odd Company cans and the Dr Bugs popcorn cups. I also designed packaging for them to be sold in as multipacks.
Initial Concepts I initially was planning to have both the popcorn and the drinks in the same packaging, but I later decided to seperate them. The two items were usually located in different sections of the supermarket, and popcorn lasted better in the cupboard while the drinks were usually stored in the fridge. Using Adobe Illustrator, I brainstormed some concepts for the labels and packaging. I then received feedback from several of my peers on the designs.
Label Variations After the first round of feedback, I explored several label variations to find the right artstyle for the packaging. I ended up choosing the fifth design in the top right, as I felt it reflected Odd Company's vibrant, fun personality and individuality.
Icons I developed a set of four icons to put on the packaging. I brainstormed several variations of icons, and then presented the best of them for feedback. After some slight changes, including lightening the lineweight of the icons, they were ready to be included in my packaging.
Multipacks I created the packaging and dielines for the two multipacks. The Dr Bugs box held four individual popcorn cups, and the Odd Company box held six drinks, two of each flavour. I am intending on printing them out and making the packaging physically later. I created the dielines in Adobe Illustrator.
Software Skills I used Adobe Illustrator to create the artwork and designs for the labels and boxes. I then used Adobe Dimensions to create the mockups of the cans and popcorn cups, and Adobe Photoshop to mockup the boxes. I also used Adobe InDesign to create an accompanying process document for grading.
Copyright The Odd Company logo and Dr Bugs logo are owned by their respective companies. I created and own all other artwork and assets.
