Context This project was created as part of my degree at Yoobee Colleges. We were tasked with designing a fictional event and then creating posters and other collateral, as well as researching costs, competitors, and the target audiences. I worked on this project for four weeks during November 2021.
I created a fictional book fair named 'Word Garden'. The event would include speeches, workshops, author meet & greets, a secondhand bookswap, and other stalls. It was aimed at an audience of enthusiastic readers and beginner writers, in an attempt to foster relationships between authors and readers and to encourage junior writers to pursue their craft.
Poster One of the most important aspects of this project was the poster design. I drafted several posters before combining two of my later posters to create a final design. I had choosen to make an isometric design, which later influenced the rest of the work in this series. I received feedback from several of my peers on my poster design, then made some minor changes to create the final version seen in the bottom right.
Logo I also designed a logo to tie the different works in the series together. I initially drafted six possibilities and refined two, and thought that I had settled on my final design with the top right image. However, when I decided to go for an isometric design for the poster and other collatoral, the logo no longer fit. I designed a 3D, isometric logo instead, taking inspiration from the poster design.
Icons I designed a set of icons for use in the map later on. I did some user-testing where I assesed the clarity and readibility of the icons and refined which icons to develop. I also developed them in the isometric style the rest of the project was designed in. Later, when integrating the icons into the map, I made some colour and contrast changes and turned the circle into a leaf shape to fit the 'Word Garden' theme.
Map One of the other important aspects of this project was the wayfinding and map design. I trialed several layouts for the fair, using the real-world building Shed 10 on the Auckland city waterfront. I continued in the isometric style, and went through several drafts of the map. For later versions, I increased the contrast and readibilty of the map by adding in the peach tones for the background, and enlarging and changing the contrast of the icons.
Deliverables I expanded my designs into a series of products for the event. I created a design for a ticket that doubles as a bookmark, an apron for staff, a totebag for attendees, a journal and notebook for attending the writing workshops, and a flag for outside the event.
Software Skills I used Adobe Illustrator to create the artwork and designs for the poster and other assets and also to create dielines. I used Adobe Photoshop to mockup the range of deliverables. I also used Adobe InDesign to create an accompanying process document for grading.
